This 1880s timber and tin worker’s cottage was constructed on land that had been part of the Albion Sportsground Estate. Historical evidence indicates that it was one of six near-identical houses constructed adjacent to each other, and was a speculative development intended to benefit from Stoneleigh Street’s proximity to the newly opened Albion Railway Station. The rail line allowed convenient and inexpensive access to the city and Albion became an attractive locale to construct modest working class dwellings for purchase or to let. As such it provides evidence of the historical pattern of working-class housing development in Albion in the late nineteenth century and is a good example of the timber and tin worker’s cottages that were a feature of the Albion locality.
