These adjoining dwellings were built circa 1886 for Denis Twomey, following the transfer of the property from John Ryan to Denis Twomey (also spelt Twoomey) in 1883. In 1887 Twomey sold the property to Charles Fletcher. The property, advertised for sale in March 1890, and ‘only recently erected’, was described as ‘a large two-story brick building, divided into two’. The property subsequently had a number of different owners and occupiers. In 1933, the then owner of the property, Emma Lewis, named the building ‘Miama Flats’.

This painted brick building, was built during the 1880s boom era. It is a rare surviving example of adjoining townhouses in an area dominated by single-storey, workers’ dwellings. This area between Brunswick and James Streets was marked by closely-settled subdivisions with narrow streets where working-class families lived close to where they worked in the factories and shops of Fortitude Valley and later, the wharves, warehouses and factories of Teneriffe.
