The Brunswick Hotel designed by architect George William Campbell-Wilson was built in 1889, replacing an earlier hotel on the site. It was built for William Hill Robertson, a long-term owner of the property, who died on 22 February 1922. Campbell-Wilson also designed the 1887-88 Royal Hotel, Nundah and in 1881 the Crown Hotel Lutwyche. The two-storey Brunswick Hotel, typical of the corner hotels erected during the flamboyant 1880s boom period, reflects the Victorian Filigree style. The building has a truncated corner to take advantage of its corner position and incorporates the main entry with the hotel’s name and date in raised lettering on the pediment. Other features include the decorative parapet, cantilevered balcony with curved verandah, cast iron columns, and columns as well as the pilasters with Corinthian capitals flanking arched entries. Though there were extensive alterations and additions to the hotel in 1957, the building’s original style has been maintained.
