This timber store, now listed at 68 Heal Street, was built circa 1919 on the site of a tennis court, part of a property at 60 Heal Street (later 62 Heal Street). The property was owned by Fanny Yardley and the store was run by members of the Yardley family. The shop and its location reflect New Farm’s early suburban development on the northern side of Brunswick Street, between Brunswick and James Streets. This area was marked by closely-settled subdivisions with narrow streets which were occupied by working-class families close to where they worked in the factories and shops of Fortitude Valley and later, the wharves, warehouses and factories of Teneriffe.
