A corner store has existed on this site from the 1890s. The property was owned by James Carroll from 1887-1913 when it was transferred to Oswald Charles Hitchcock, a clerk living at ‘Roslyn’, River Terrace. In 1916 the premises were described as a ‘wooden shop and dwelling’ in a Council surveyor notebook. In 1920 Hitchcock advertised the corner shop and dwelling for sale at 700 pounds cash or 750 pounds terms’ and a year later sold the property to Ottilie Clausen. While extended over time, the original truncated form of the timber, corner shop is still evident. The building reflects New Farm’s early suburban development on the northern side of Brunswick Street. This area, marked by closely-settled subdivisions with narrow streets, was occupied by working-class families close to where they worked in the factories and shops of Fortitude Valley and later, the wharves, warehouses and factories of Teneriffe.
