‘Winborne’ was designed in 1933 by Chambers & Ford for Alfred Theodore Walter, a salesman. This followed the transfer of the property from Charles Henry Biscoe, a warehouseman, to the Walters in May 1933. The flats were built adjacent to ‘Athelstane’, formerly part of Biscoe’s property. The L-shaped block of two-storey flats was a modified version of the original sketch prepared by Chambers and Ford in April 1933 which had the entire block facing Merthyr Road and comprising six instead of five units. The two-storey building was built in the Inter-War Old English style. It has incorporated exposed brick, roughcast masonry and timber detailing into the striking design with face bricks to the ground floor window sills, rough cast above the sill-line and half timbering on the upper level. Other features include the tiled portico entrances on the building’s eastern and western sides, multi-paned casement windows, terracotta tiled roof with exposed rafters under the overhanging eaves.
