This block of flats was originally built in 1895 as a single dwelling for Richard Board and his wife Emma, an elderly couple who named the house ‘Sundown Cottage’. In the 1930s the house was converted to a multiple dwelling and may have served as a boarding house before becoming a dedicated block of flats later in the decade. Due to rapid population growth and a lack of affordable housing in the interwar period, it was common for larger houses to be converted into multiple dwellings, particularly during the 1930s and 1950s.

History

Built in 1895, Sundown Cottage as it was originally known was constructed as a single residence for Richard Board and his wife Emma. Listed as a 74 year old ‘Gentleman’ in the 1896 Electoral for the Nundah District. This title remained current until Emma’s death in 1909.

It is likely that in the early part of the 1930’s Sundown Cottage was converted from its use as a single dwelling to that of a boarding house. Between 1936 & 1939 it became known as ‘Dalveen Flats’ with a Mrs B Bryford as Landlady while owned by Dorothy MacMahon. Dalveen may be possibly named after the Dalveen Pass of the Southern Uplands in Scotland and is marked thus in the November 1953 sewerage detail maps.
