Constructed in 1950, this is an excellent example of an Functionalist/Art Deco styled house, arguably one of the best examples in Brisbane. This house has an original lift, which is a rarity for any house in Brisbane, and certainly rare for a house of this age. The house is a local landmark, owing to its prominent height and distinctive features.

History
BCC Building Card records indicate that approval was issued for construction of a dwelling in October 1949. The owner was noted as W. A. Back and the builder was Cramphorn and Millin. Approval for a later garage was issued in 1953.
Description
This house has stylistic similarities with 'Chateau Nous', a 1938 house in Beatrice Tce., Ascot, which is entered on the Queensland Heritage Register. While the Ascot house is important as an early example of this style in Brisbane, both houses have an impressive scale and quality of design which sets them apart from other examples of Functionalist/Art Deco style houses in Brisbane.
The design of the house features strong horizontal lines typical of the Modern Movement as it was known in Australia in the 1930s and 40s. This horizontality is achieved in this design in its capped parapet, flat cantilevered concrete window hoods, and solid balustrade over the entry. Modern features also include the streamlined corners, and steel framed casement windows. Art Deco features include the semi-circular swept parapet line on the lift tower combined with the porthole window, the stripped classical columns around the entry and the crisp geometric mouldings of the parapet.
