Clara Sachs, wife of Emil Frederich Sachs acquired this property in October 1907 and a house was constructed on the site by 1909. Emil Sachs established a successful ironmongery business in Brisbane which pioneered barbed wire and steel nail manufacture in Queensland and introduced the hot galvanising process. After the death of her husband in 1913, Clara retained the house until 1917. She then sold it to Annette Eileen Douglas, wife of Edward Archibald Douglas, barrister and Supreme Court judge. The house was known as “Ellan-Vanin” from the mid-1930s, and has remained in the Douglas family.

History
Clara Thekla Sachs, wife of Emil Frederich Sachs acquired this property in October 1907, mortgaging it to the London Bank of Australia Limited in November. Her husband, Emil Sachs, had been a manager of machinery firm Wooley, Bergin, and Co at Bundaberg, and moved to Brisbane in 1897 to establish his own business. The ironmongery company of E Sachs & Co was very successful, and in 1899 Sachs was admitted as a new member of the Brisbane Chamber of Commerce. His company pioneered barbed wire and steel nail manufacture in Queensland, and introduced the hot galvanising process.
The family were resident at Sutherland Ave, Ascot by 1909. The house appears to have been known as ‘Planen’ from circa 1912. Emil Sachs died in 1913, however Clara retained the house until 1917 when it sold to Annette Eileen Douglas, wife of Edward Archibald Douglas, barrister and Supreme Court judge. The house was known as “Ellen Vanin” from the mid-1930s. It has remained in the Douglas family.
