In 1883, Albert Nelson Nixson bought 13 acres, 3 roods and 14.8 perches of land at Virginia. He subdivided it into Virginia’s first housing estate ‘Meadfoot’ that was centred on the newly created Meadfoot Street. This estate was auctioned in November 1887. But Jose Chambers eventually bought one rood and 8 perches for a small farm rather than a single 16-perch block for a rural residence that was within walking distance of the new Virginia Railway Station (opened 1888). Chambers built his farmhouse at 11 Meadfoot Street in 1892. Its rarity is derived from it being one of only three nineteenth century residences remaining in Virginia.
