This nineteenth century brick shop and residence was constructed sometime around 1889 for W.H Lane a local grocer. The shop is illustrative of the pattern of development in Windsor in the 1880s, and also of the effect the Lutwyche brick making industry had on the buildings constructed in the vicinity.

History
This nineteenth century two-storey brick shop was the business premises, and, possibly, the residence, of W.H. Lane, a produce merchant and grocer in Windsor.
Postal records indicate that Lane’s shop was operating on this site from around 1889. However, a photograph estimated to date from circa 1880s shows an earlier 'General Store' of Lane’s, also situated in Lutwyche Road, then known as Bowen Bridge Road. The exact site of this earlier store is not known. Lane is recorded in postal records as a storekeeper in O’Connell Town, as this part of Windsor was then known, from 1885.
Photographic evidence shows the shop at 221 Lutwyche Road around the turn of the century with a verandah on the upper storey with three sets of French doors opening on to the verandah. Both the verandah and the front of the lower storey have decorative iron lacework. A detail plan dated 1935 shows a narrower verandah to the rear of the building.
The upper verandah has been enclosed. The roof line and separate verandah roof have remained relatively intact.
The building is an important remnant of the nineteenth century history of Windsor.
