Ferny Grove State School opened as the Upper Kedron Provisional School in August 1875. Sixteen pupils were enrolled on its inauguration, children of the dairy and crop farmers living in the area. The school was renamed the Upper Kedron (or Kedron Upper) State School in October 1909 and a new building, probably designed by government architect Thomas Pye, was opened in 1914. Enrolment remained low, due to the sparsely populated nature of Upper Kedron, and the one-teacher, one-room school was threatened with closure in the 1930s. The school survived, was given its present name in 1940 and expanded in the 1970s and 1980s, following increased urbanisation of the area. The old timber school building structure, facing McGinn Street, is of significance to the local community, as it provided educational facilities to its residents from the early twentieth century, and reflects the rural nature of Upper Kedron and Ferny Grove from the late nineteenth century to the late twentieth century.
