This hotel was built for publican Walter Samuel Smith circa 1889-90. It was designed by prominent Brisbane architect Richard Gailey, and erected by J Stewart for £2335. The first license to the East Brisbane Hotel as it was known, was granted to Hesperus Tracy in January 1890. Publicans and owners changed numerous times, and around World War I it became known as the Stanley Hotel. Castlemaine Perkins undertook work on the premises in 1938, likely to have been extensions to the front of the structure. Although other works have subsequently been undertaken at the site, the core of the 1889 brick structure remains.
