This property, originally a timber residence, was constructed in 1910 for G.F. Bridgman, to a design by Richard Gailey. The house, an investment property for Bridgman, was situated in a fashionable part of Gregory Terrace, opposite the Exhibition Grounds and Museum and near several grand residences turned boarding houses. It was first occupied by journalist Charles Jenkinson, who was later elected Mayor. Known as ‘Elvezia’ during its early life, the property was converted to a boarding house in the 1920s and renamed ‘Lorne’ in the 1930s. Its proximity to the Exhibition Grounds made it popular accommodation for short and long term residents, particularly for country families staying for ‘the show’. With additions and alterations the property has been run as a hotel since the 1960s.
