Historical evidence indicated that this large two-storey sandstone house was built in the mid-1880s for Richard Jarman, a successful Brisbane saddler. Jarman had an award winning saddlery business in Queen Street, described in his advertising as the “largest Saddlery and Harness Manufacturer in Queensland”. Jarman, whose establishment made a saddle which was presented to the Prince of Wales at the Colonial and Indian Exhibition in London in 1880, also had branch businesses in Townsville and Beaudesert.

Jarman and his wife, Elizabeth, acquired over an acre of land in 1881-82 on elevated ground between Hillside Crescent and Crescent Road (then named Weekes Street). The new house, which could be accessed by a steep stairway from Crescent Road, was named ‘Manaro’. The property was sold in 1899 to Captain Thomas Almond, the Portmaster of Brisbane, who renamed the house ‘The Priory’. After the death of Captain Almond in 1902, the house appears to have been rented and renamed ‘Albermarle’.
