This residence was built for Wilfred and Mary Scott Iliff, a civil servant in the Stock Department and his wife, around 1902. Hamilton, long noted for its grand residences and picturesque setting, was becoming more densely populated in the early twentieth century, following improved transportation, the appeal of its flood-proof higher ground and estate sales in the area. Sold by the Iliffs in 1908, the house was used as a residence as well as a setting for social and charitable events hosted by its subsequent owners, including two landowners of large rural properties and a justice of the Supreme Court of Queensland. The high set two-storey timber residence, known variously as ‘Alva’, ‘Dangore’ and ‘Devoncourt’, features prominent verandas and a bay window on the ground floor. It provides an example of the increased residential development of Hamilton in the early twentieth century and is a fine contribution to the Langside Road streetscape.
