This sandstone cottage was constructed around 1886 by stonemason John Steele. The site on which it stands had been offered for sale as part of the ‘Mowbraytown Estate’ and was purchased by Steele’s wife Ann earlier that year. Steele’s cottage, one of the first residences in the area, is an unusual departure from the timber worker’s cottages which sprang up in East Brisbane in the late nineteenth century. The property was sold to the Pick family in 1916, remaining their residence until 1931. Following a transfer to trustees, the Voznesensky family owned the property from 1940 until the 1980s. The cottage, based on a four-roomed floor plan with basement below, has a distinctive facade and also features an attic opening onto a cantilevered balcony over the verandah.
