History

Land speculators John Potts, William Dart and William Wilson subdivided this area into hundreds of allotments and began sales in early 1886. William James Thompson acquired this property in May 1886 and erected ‘Haroldton’ in 1888. Thompson was employed as an engineer by the Queensland Government from 1881, and from 1885 had been the Engineer-in-Charge of the of the government dredge ‘Bremer’. Thompson lived in the house for several years, thereafter letting it to various tenants until sold on in 1907.

Description

The square shaped central core contains a corrugated iron pyramid roof with its overhang supported on a pair of corbelled brackets. The external front wall to the central core is single skinned with diamond bracing and exposed studs. The core is surrounded by a separately roofed verandah with twin verandah posts decorated with brackets, capital and astragal. The front features a gabled entry that protrudes above the verandah roof and incorporates an attractive fretwork pediment.
