This brick cottage was constructed between 1883-1885 for storekeeper turned builder and stonemason Jenkin Rees. It is significant as an example of a late nineteenth century brick cottage associated with the local early brickmaking industry and demonstrates the development of Lutwyche as a residential suburb at this time.

History
Historical and architectural evidence suggests that this brick cottage was built around 1883-1885 for Jenkin Rees, a storekeeper turned builder and stone mason.
Jenkin Rees purchased the allotment on which the cottage is built in 1883. Post office directories show Jenkin Rees as residing in the Lutwyche area from 1878 to 1885-86. They record James Fitton, the subsequent owner of the property, residing in William Street (as Fuller Street was formerly known) from around 1891 although he did not purchase the land until 1895.
One outstanding feature of the character of Windsor, Lutwyche and the surrounding suburbs is the unusually large number of 19th century brick residences. These range from grand houses such as Boothville at Windsor, to small brick cottages such as those found in Bess St and Fuller Street at Lutwyche.
Brickmaking was one of the earliest manufacturing enterprises in Brisbane during the colonial period. By 1871, census figures recorded 672 brick dwellings in Brisbane. Bricks were generally made by hand until the 1870s and 1880s, when mechanised processes such as the Hoffman method began to take over. During this period, the greatest concentration of brickyards in Brisbane appears to have been in the Lutwyche area. Brickmakers in Lutwyche during the 1870s - 1880s included William Williams, Samuel Hedge and John Salt.
The property remained in the Fitton family until 1957, when it changed hands after the death of Annie Fitton.
Alterations and an addition to the original cottage were carried out in 1958. A garage was added the following year and various alterations have been carried out since then.
Description
This small cottage is constructed of brick on a porphyry stone base, with a transverse gable roof sheeted in corrugated steel and enclosed front and rear verandahs. Part of the original rear wall has been removed to allow the kitchen access to the enclosed rear verandah. A skillion roofed patio and carport have been added in the rear yard.
