History

While the exact age of this tree is not known, it is believed to be at least 100 years old. It is one of Brisbane’s most well known trees and is located in a prominent position on Haig Road, a busy local road of the suburb of Milton.

The tree provides evidence of public 19th century planting in the streets of the local area that was done to improve the visual amenity of the suburb. Avenues of similar trees can be seen on both sides of the adjacent Gregory Park between Haig Road and Baroona Road.

Because of its close proximity to the Milton State School that has several similar fig trees in its grounds, the tree on the corner of Haig Road and Bayswater Road has a special significance for the staff and children of the school. Signage for the school in Bayswater Road includes an illustration of a mature fig tree.

Description

This is a magnificent and healthy Ficus microcarpa. It is a venerable specimen and its majestic appearance and size provide a great visual impact due to juxtaposition of the large scale, textures and colours.
