The Mount Crosby pumping station is one of Australia’s earliest major water pumping stations. Built in stages commencing in 1890, it has been in the same place, carrying out the same function for more than 125 years. The buildings and processes encapsulate the many developments that have occurred in the technology of public water supply over the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Substantial elements of the original fabric are still in use, supplying water to Brisbane. The robustness and general high quality of the buildings embody the civic pride invested in this important facility. The waterworks were the impetus for settlement at Mount Crosby and have formed the principal employment and focus of this community since establishment.
This is now a Queensland Heritage Place. Please refer to the Queensland Heritage Register for further details.
