This picturesque timber cottage was built by the early 1870s when it was leased to members of the Bourne family. It was known as ‘Edenglassie’ from the late 1870s when leased and then owned by members of the Coutts family – one of Brisbane’s early squatting families. In 1881 the property was purchased by Wilhelmina Coutts, widow of early Scottish colonist Donald Coutts of Bulimba House fame. The property remained in the Coutts family until 1920 when it was transferred to Wilhelmina Jane Payne and has been owned by the Payne family since then. ‘Edenglassie’, which takes its name from the original name given to Brisbane in 1824, was built on Donald Tusch Mackenzie’s 1860s subdivision clustered around Bowen Street and Bowen Terrace. The dwelling’s location near the street frontage reflected the early layout of blocks to maximise rear space for outbuildings and stables.
