This former corner shop was constructed circa 1923 when it was owned by John Edward Brady, who had acquired the property from his mother, Catherine Brady, following her death in 1911. In 1922 the land was advertised for sale as ‘a magnificent building site fronting Brunswick-street tramline’. Brady constructed the building by November 1924. In 1926 the property was transferred to Benjamin Winston, billiard-table maker, following Brady’s death in 1925. It remained in the Winston family for several decades. This interwar timber building with parapet and footpath awning, exemplifies the style of small-scale retail development at the time. With residential growth of the area from the 1870s onwards, Brunswick Street developed as the principal commercial artery between Fortitude Valley and the river.
