This two-storey masonry building was built in 1929 for New Farm family, the Benjamins. In September 1929 the application to construct the shops and flats was received by the Brisbane City Council. The building on the corner of Brunswick Street and Merthyr Road was designed by Richard Gailey Jnr and constructed by JH Hutchison. In 1930 Les Benjamin was first recorded at the address where he had established a chemist shop. The interwar building reflects the growth in New Farm’s population in this period and the commercial development of this part of Brunswick Street.
