‘Sydney House’ was built by Noel Kratzmann, an influential builder in Brisbane’s postwar reconstruction. The house was built for Noah Stone, a storekeeper, and his wife Zara Edna following their purchase of the property in August 1951. It was built on the site of a corrugated-iron toy factory owned by Henry John Sutton, who died in 1942 following an accident in the factory. Sutton’s Toy Factory was demolished in 1949 and the site was subsequently advertised as a ‘choice corner block’ in April 1950. This two-storey, brick house with matching fence was built in the Post-War International style. However it features elements of the Inter-War Functionalist style, including the curved brick corners, concrete cantilevered window hoods and metal verandah railings. The name ‘Sydney House’ in black metal letter is attached to the facade of the building.
