The middle section of ‘Fernside’, may have been built following the purchase of the property by William Villiers Brown in 1865. Villiers Brown, who grew up on the nearby 1850s family property, ‘Kingsholme’, had extensive banking and pastoral interests, and later represented Townsville in the Queensland Government. Villiers, Lechmere and Bailey Streets were named after family members.During the 1880s building boom Villiers Street became a desirable residential address for merchants and public figures with the subdivision of large New Farm estates, such as the Villiers Estate, into sizeable suburban allotments.George Myers, who purchased the masonry residence in 1887, transformed it into a grand home, reflecting his status as a Brisbane merchant and founder of the Brisbane Synagogue. He named the house ‘Glen Erin’, which was renamed ‘Fernside’ after the property was transferred to Ida Maud Levy and Edith Rachael Solomon in 1918.
