This shaped brick cottage was built for bricklayer, Mark Doggett between his purchase of the allotment in 1882 and 1887. One of several bricklayers named Doggett living in the New Farm area, it is likely that he built the house himself. Mark Doggett became a prominent member of the Master Builder’s Association and was responsible for the construction of many large buildings in the city, including the South Brisbane police station, the outpatients ward of the Brisbane General Hospital and the power houses at Luggage Point and Pinkenba. He resided in his Harcourt Street cottage until his death in 1938.The cottage was built in an area which developed in the late 19th century as a working class residential suburb. It has a steeply pitched pyramidal roof with a chimney at the rear and a front verandah with iron balustrading and a convex roof. By 1912, the rear of the cottage had a second verandah and a bathroom underneath the building. A brick and iron front fence complements the house.
