Fire hydrant

Period

Interwar 1919-1939

These fire hydrants were installed in the mid 1920s as a safeguard against fire in the nearby woolstores. Hydrants like this are now rare in Brisbane and these examples inform us about the industrial landscape of the woolstores and about early twentieth century fire safety measures.

History

The highly flammable nature of woolstores and their contents led to an apparent proliferation of fire hydrants within the woolstores precinct at Newstead during the peak of its use. From at least as early as 1916, the Fire Brigade was installing pillar hydrants in various parts of the city. During the late 1920s and early 1930s, Council’s Water Supply and Sewerage Department adhered to what had by then become the standard practice of installing a fire hydrant every 4 chain (81m) along a water main. The woolstores took extra precautions with the installation of additional hoses and in some cases a sprinkler system.

Only two pillar style fire hydrants remain in public view in this precinct, both in Macquarie Street between Beeston and Hastings Street. There were initially three hydrants in this section of the road, connected to a six inch water main which was laid in 1926. The hydrants were manufactured by Rolley & Padgett, a Brisbane engineering firm which operated from its Charlotte Street address between 1924 and 1928.
