‘Fallowfield’ was built circa 1885 for George and Mary Elizabeth Agnew. George was an engineer and businessman who established several companies, including the Nundah Carriage Works, Queensland Trustees Limited and the Federal Deposit Bank. He and Mary lived in the Sandgate house, and George represented the district in Parliament from 1888 until 1896. Agnew died in 1934 but the house remained in the family’s possession until 2003.

History

Owned by George and Mary Elizabeth Agnew. George born 1853 and died 1934. Arrived in Australia in 1880.

George was and engineer by trade and with his brother Hugh ran the Nundah Carriage Works (also known as the Nundah Railway Carriage, Waggon and Tramcar Company Limited), getting their first contract for rolling-stock from the Qld Government in 1883. The Company also claimed to have introduced the Otis Company lifts into Brisbane, many of which began operation in the late 1880s.   

With his brother he also established Queensland Trustees Limited, and the Federal Deposit Bank.

George was resident in Sandgate from at least 1885, possibly earlier, though not in “Fallowfield”. George prepared plans and specifications for his ‘Villa House’ and called for tenders to erect it from early January 1885.  

Was also MLA for the district from 1888 to 1896.

Residing there in 1930 when Mary died. George died in 1934. House remained in the family.

Description

Substantial nineteenth century highset timber house with steeply pitched roof and dormers. Historical and streetscape value.
