Established in 1859 by Thomas Gernier as a burial place for his family, it was subsequently used by a number of local families in the district. Gernier left 3 roods of his large property in trust for burial of his family and others. Control of the cemetery passed to the Yerongpilly Shire Council in 1924, and thus to Brisbane City Council in 1925. The cemetery became surrounded by the Archerfield aerodrome from the late 1920s. It is now owned by the Federal Airports Corporation but leased by Brisbane City Council.
