The South Brisbane Memorial Park was opened in 1920 and gazetted in 1925 in recognition of the patriotic endeavours of the South Brisbane citizens in the Great War (WWI). The park, originally a much larger site which was reduced over time for civic improvements, was a popular recreation spot after improvements altered it from a series of barren cliffs to a grassy terraced site. Greater acknowledgment of its role as a memorial park occurred from the 1930s. Notable structures in the park include a memorial arch (1934), a porphyry Second World War Memorial erected by the 2/31st Infantry Battalion (1955), a General Memorial in black granite and white marble, and an early wrought iron drinking fountain (cast in 1888). The park forms a cool, shady oasis in a busy urban area and has provided a recreation and memorial area for the local community since the 1920s.
