U.S. Army Flagpole (former) (QHR)

This flagpole was erected in 1943 by the military engineers of Headquarters, Base Section 3, of the United States Army. It marked one of two main entrances to ‘Camp Victoria Park’ which is where The U.S. Army Services of Supply (USASOS) camp was based. Another flagpole was erected near Herston Road and now sits near the Victoria Park Golf Course clubhouse. The Victoria Park camp was closed in September 1944 as the war progressed and men were transferred to a new base in Dutch New Guinea. The camp buildings that remained were used for various purposes before being demolished in 1959 with the construction of the Centenary Pool complex. The flagpole was restored in 1988 and is now all that remains of the site.
