This attractive timber and tin residence was built circa 1902 for Ethel and Charles Kelly when Ascot was developing into an affluent suburb favoured by professional middle class residents. The house remained in the Kelly family until 1945 and has since had a number of owners. In the late 1960s, it was converted into flats, which was common for large houses in the 1950s and 60s due to widespread housing shortages, however it has since been converted back into a single, private dwelling.

History

Historical research indicates that this timber residence was built circa 1902 for Ethel and Charles Kelly. They purchased three subdivisions in the Tattersalls Estate (bounded by Alexander, Oriel, Kitchener and Lancaster Roads) between February 1900 and November 1901. These three lots were situated on the corner of Oriel Road and Yabba Street.

At this time, Oriel Road had only around eight residences listed in postal records, including Stanley Hall (now St Rita’s School) and Oriel, the home of the Crombies, both on the northern side of the street. At the turn of the century, Clayfield was still a developing suburb which attracted mostly middle class and professional residents.

The Kelly family retained the property until 1945 when it was sold to Mary Josephine Anderson. It has since had several owners.

Changes to the site approved by Brisbane City Council include alterations in 1955 and conversion to flats in 1967.
