This mature Jacaranda tree (Jacaranda mimosifolia) stands on the corner of Turton St and Station Roads where the ‘Oasis Swimming Pool & Gardens’ was once situated. The site was developed by the Pottinger family from a flower, fruit and vegetable and poultry farm in the 1920s to one of Brisbane’s most popular tourist attractions which opened in 1938. The grounds included swimming pools, landscaped gardens, a miniature zoo of native birds and animals and a reception centre. The Pottinger family sold the site in 1966 but it continued to be used as a recreation venue, hosting weddings and conferences until the 1980s. The land was purchased by Miramar Australia in 1989 and has been redeveloped for residential use. The tree, which is highly valued by local residents, is over 70 years old and is a valued local landmark.
