After seeing the need for a local butcher, William Henry Marshall constructed this timber and tin shop and adjoining residence here in 1893. Marshall operated his butcher shop, known as ‘Marshall’s Butcher,’ and lived with his family in the residence at the rear of the shop until 1923, after which time he leased the property to a number of various tenants. The shop and residence are now used as offices.

History
In June 1893, William Henry Marshall, a butcher, purchased a 10.6 perch allotment on the corner of Vulture and Cambridge Streets, West End. Marshall recognised that this corner would be a prime location for his butcher shop. In the decade prior to 1893 this part of Vulture Street (between Cambridge and Thomas Streets) had steadily grown as a local shopping hub. By 1893, residents from the densely populated streets nearby had only a short walk to the end of their street if they needed a grocer, baker, fruiterer, blacksmith or bootmaker. Other services could be provided a short distance away in Boundary Street.
Seeing the need for a local butcher shop, Marshall immediately had this timber shop and residence erected on his newly acquired site. He ran his business from this shop for 30 years until 1923. In that year he and his family moved across the road to another house on Cambridge Street. Meanwhile from 1923 he leased the shop and residence to George Buckenham until 1930 when the lease was transferred to Frederick George Rogers for £3.5s per week. Rogers continued to use the buildings after William Marshall died in August 1932, leasing them from Marshall’s widow, Martha, and Lucy Marshall, a spinster, presumably their daughter. Martha Marshall died in 1942, and the family sold the property in 1966.
The butcher shop has recently been refurbished and is currently used as a picture framing shop. The residence was formerly used by a group of artists as a studio and offices, but is now occupied by the owner.
Description
This single storey 1893 shop has a truncated corner beneath a rectangular hipped roof. It is predominantly constructed of timber and corrugated iron and has a post supported street awning that turns the corner. The corner entry has double doors with glass upper panels and a top light above. A glass shopfront occurs to the left of the entry facing Vulture Street.
The main part of the building has been extended in both directions. Along Vulture Street is a flat roofed addition containing a central roller-door. Along Cambridge Street is a lean-to structure with an opening enclosed by brick and continuing from this a long blank timber boarded wall of a flat roofed structure. At the corners of the gutters on the main roof there are pressed metal ornaments. The two storey building behind the shop was once the original owner’s residence. It is now separated by a treed courtyard.
