This two-storey shop/residence was built circa 1885 as an investment property for Cecilia Hockings. Cecilia, the wife of William Hockings, had purchased the vacant land in 1883. Situated at the busy corner of Vulture and Thomas Streets, it was an ideal location in which to construct a corner shop with a residence on top. Among the local businesses that have occupied this building are the prominent Brisbane butchers Marshall’s Meats. William Charles Titlerington purchased this shop/house in 1923 and the Titlerington family retained ownership of the site until the late 1960s. Each storey has, at various times, been leased separately so that the building could accommodate two different businesses. Once common throughout Brisbane, few nineteenth century corner shop/houses remain in Brisbane.
