John Davies, former river captain with Gibbs Bright and later shipping agent for the Aberdare Colliery, acquired 8 small allotments totalling 3 roods 8 perches of land in 1885. Shortly after his retirement in 1899 Davies had title to this 26.66 perch allotment transferred to his grandson John Sydney Johnson, then aged five. Other grandchildren of John Davies also received title to adjacent properties. It is likely Davies had a number of investment houses built on these allotments. A house, known as Sydney Villa, had been erected on the site by 1903. It was apparently an investment property and was rented and never occupied by the Johnson family. John Sydney Johnson sold the site in 1937.
