This residence was originally the servants' quarters for the adjacent fine home, "St John's Wood", constructed in the 1860s by high-ranking public servant, Daniel Rowntree Somerset. St John's Wood was later sold to prominent barrister and later Supreme Court Judge, George Rogers Harding, and became a notable site of society functions. The servants' quarters were attached to the western side of the house, by a kitchen, laundry and other rooms. The kitchen was later demolished, and the servants' quarters converted and extended to form a separate house. This house was subdivided from the main property in 1958. The present owners have retained much of the original structure, with a number of additions.
