Engineer and ironmonger John McCool bought a 14-perch block of land in Boundary Street in 1879. A South Brisbane tenant, McCool had his home built on this site by 1887. He had become a storeman and remained in his home until 1895. In 1896, popular South Brisbane portrait and landscape artist Richard John Randall purchased the property. His family relocated from their Merivale Street mansion ‘Panshanger’ to a Birkdale orchard in that year with their wealth increasing as they invested in real estate. Richard Randall died in 1906 and the rental property passed to his father, confection maker and Queensland emigration agent George Randall. It remained in the hands of the Randall family until 1934.
