The semi-detached houses at 38 Mark Lane were probably built in the late 1890s, replacing a five-roomed residence fronting Mark Lane which burned down in July 1894. The residence was part of a larger site, stretching from Mark Lane to Vulture Street, which was purchased in stages by Joseph How (from 1883) and his stepson Harry Howes (from 1887). How lived on the Mark Lane frontage with his family and ran a butchery, slaughtering, dairy and carrying business on the rest of the site. After the three houses were erected, How lived in one and leased the others to tenants. The site was subdivided and sold in 1910 and has since passed through a number of owners.
