The timber church is the second Baptist Church in Petrie Terrace. The first was built in ca. 1870 behind the current church fronting Chapel Street. As the population of Petrie Terrace grew in the late nineteenth century, so too did the Baptist congregation. After several years of fundraising, enough money had been raised to build a larger church. In January 1895 the new church was opened with a series of services conducted over a day. Designed by Reverend W Richer, the church has played a large role in many Petrie Terrace residents’ lives. It has recently been converted into a house.
