History

Hundreds of residents in the Bulimba Electorate enlisted for military service during World Wars I, and it is recorded that at least 80 from the electorate were killed.   Memorial plaques and honour boards were erected in Morningside, Bulimba, Norman Park and Cannon Hill Memorial Halls. A  Memorial Park with grandstand and trees dedicated to the service men and women of Bulimba and an honour avenue of weeping figs was established in Balmoral Park. A number of trees were planted at Cannon Hill and a war memorial statue erected at Tingalpa.

The Balmoral sub-branch of the Returned Services League met in the School of Arts and attended rememberence services at a “memorial arch” built in the School of Arts. No mention has yet be found of the memorial erected to the northwest of the School of Arts. Photographic evidence indicates it was in place by 1937.

The monument is present on BCC Department of Works Detail Plan No.1223 not dated for the original survey but revised to July 1957. It is standing to the west of the School of Arts building to the corner of Oxford Street and Riding

Road.

The squat concrete plinth earlier supported a World War I German machine gun that had been captured by the 9th Battalion A.I.F. during operations near Merris, Flanders in June 1918. The gun disappeared from the plinth sometime during the 1950s.
