‘Taishan’ flats were constructed in 1936 for Amina and William C. Dodds, to a design by architectural firm Cavanagh and Cavanagh. The striking brick and plaster building contained six flats (two per floor) which were quickly leased to tenants attracted by the central and prestigious location. A fire destroyed the top floor in October 1938, killing William Dodds, who had resided on the ground floor. Repaired in 1939 and sold in 1942, the flats passed through a number of owners, owned individually by the residents from the 1970s. These flats are representative of the growth of high-density dwellings in inner-city Brisbane in the interwar period, and are a conspicuous example of a multi-tenanted building in the Spanish Mission design.
