Queensland Postal Honour Board for WW1 (QHR)

Near the end of the World War I Gallipoli Campaign, Queensland Postal staff fund-raised 50 guineas to install an honour board inside the vestibule of the GPO. It was to commemorate the sacrifice of their co-workers who had joined the 1st Australian Imperial Force (AIF). Unveiled on 15 December 1915 by Deputy-Post Master General H.B. Templeton, this maple honour board listed the names of 187 local postal employees who had enlisted by that date. An unusual feature is a coloured relief map of the Gallipoli Peninsula located at the apex of the honour board’s pediment. During 1916-18, further enlistees’ names were added, making a total of 350. The names of the war dead were highlighted. This board is complimented by two cast-iron Honour Rolls (World Wars I and 11) located on pillars near the front entrance of the GPO.
