The Brookfield Cemetery, covering just over 1.6 hectares, was gazetted in 1872, with the earliest known burial dating from 1876. It was held in private trust before ownership was transferred to the Brisbane City Council in 1930. Located in the semi-rural community of Brookfield, the cemetery is only small, but reflects changes in burial practices that occurred throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Its layout and earliest funerary furniture are especially indicative of Victorian era cemeteries. The cemetery retains significant social and cultural importance to the local community, and family and friends of those deceased.

History

Portion 61 of the Parish of Indooroopilly was gazetted as the Brookfield general cemetery in May 1872. The earliest known burials, those of the infant Logan sisters, occurred in 1876 and 1877, though extant burial registers only begin at 1882.

Administered by Trustees from its establishment, the cemetery was transferred to the control of Brisbane City Council in July 1930.

Due to the relative isolation of the community in earlier times, this cemetery contains the burials of former residents in the immediate district, rather than a larger catchment area.

One of the recent burials in the cemetery (1967) is that of Dr. Kenyon Leslie St. Vincent Welch, the first flying Doctor.
