The Carina School was opened on 30 January 1917 with an enrolment of 62 pupils. The design of the school building incorporated a rooftop bell tower. This feature is unusual. It cannot be found in Brisbane southside schools that were founded during the same period. This building served as the only school building until just before World War Two when another classroom was added to the site. Carina School singularly served a large, semi-rural section of Brisbane until the mid-1950s, when the new housing estates created many of Brisbane’s compact, postwar suburbs.
