History

After Queensland’s separation from NSW in 1859, the area from Chelmer to Oxley was subdivided into small farms of about 30-40 acres for immigrants, who grew crops of maize, potato, bananas and sugarcane. After the railway line reached Chelmer from Ipswich in 1875, and extended across the river that same year, farms began to be replaced by residential subdivision. Thomas Mullen purchased 23 acres in Chelmer in 1871. His house was built around that time, and according to local lore, was originally sited opposite the Chelmer lagoon on Oxley rd (now the AFL ground). As a result of the 1893 floods, it was relocated to the higher ground at its present site, which was purchased by Mullen in 1898.
