This stately home was constructed in 1901 for Richard Somerset Petty. Originally set on a large three rood parcel of land, the house reflected the Petty family’s business success as partners in one of Brisbane’s foremost draperies, Grimes and Petty. When the bubonic plague swept through Queensland in the very early years of the twentieth century, Richard Petty became one of its victims in 1903. The property, known as ‘Tressylian’, was then transferred to William Douglas Grimes and became a rental property for several years. The residence is a fine representation of Clayfield’s development in the early twentieth century as a desirable address.
