History
James G Drake and Charles Collins acquired a 1 rood block in June 1936, subdividing a 16 perch allotment to Drake in June 1937. Drake had also acquired an adjacent 34 perch allotment in May, which gave him an allotment fronting what was then Arthur Street.
James Drake, a solicitor, had married Dora Cathie in July 1936. Friend and groomsmen in wedding party, architect Archie Longland, provided the design for the couple’s new home, which was built 1937-38. Longland’s functionalist influenced design was touted at the time as being ‘an example of the Continental trend in domestic architecture’. The Drakes remained in the house until 1946, and it has changed hands a number of times since then.
