Brisbane merchant Charles McEwan Hay Batchelor acquired title to this property in Arthur street April 1938. He lodged a building application in August 1938 to erect the brick residence. Designed by architect Clifford Plant, the house was estimated to cost £2300 to construct. Boswell Street builder, RA Lind carried out the work. Arthur Street was renamed Jolly Street (after the first Lord Mayor of Greater Brisbane) a few years later.Batchleor and his wife Eliza lived there until 1953.
